In English 11 A we will be coving the following themes and readings:
Learning sometimes happens best with failure. With this in mind, I allow students to redo certain assignments to receive better grades. Following are my guidelines for redoing assignments: Portfolios Portfolios may always be redone once for more credit as long as the grade is 69% or lower. If you struggle with portfolios, please schedule a time to meet with me to get help. I would be delighted to meet with you to help you understand the assignment, brainstorm ideas, or help you edit what you have completed to make sure it is on the right track. Please do not send me a draft by Webmail asking for feedback as I will consider that a submitted assignment for a grade. Test/Quiz Essay Questions I do not reset tests to be taken again unless there is an Academic Honesty issue. However, you are welcome to redo a test or quiz essay question under the following conditions:
Discussion Board Assignments This is possibly the easiest place most students find to make up major points in their course. You may make up points in this assignment at any time, but be sure to follow these steps:
Cheating and plagiarism have been issues in education ever since education began. Pressures of time management, distaste of the assignment, or fears of failure are common motivators for cheating or plagiarism. In an online environment, the tools and methods to cheat are much easier to find and use in subtle ways. However, so are the tools and methods to catch those who cheat. AI adds another avenue for cheating that may be more difficult to detect, but also can be hazardous as it has been known to make up facts including sources. Though it can be used as a tool to help in many areas, it is best used when the user already has a good understanding of their area of expertise and can detect whether or not the information is useful or not. Wherever a skill is being evaluated, it is important that the work is original to evaluate growth. Because of the increased use of AI to generate answers to test questions and portfolios, any of the following instances will automatically be assumed to contain AI:
To protect the integrity of the course, and to encourage learning the desired knowledge and skills taught in this course, the following steps will be taken in this class for each instance of plagiarism/cheating or suspected use of AI. Tests/Quizzes First Time Offense:
*Note About Reported Violations: If a reported violation has been cleared by the teacher, it will be as if no violation ever occurred. If another suspected violation occurs, it will be treated as a first time offense provided no other offenses are recorded. **Challenges When a student challenges the use of AI or outside sources, they will need to demonstrate their knowledge of the material. Due to AI plagiarism or cheating is difficult to ascertain and false suspicions are common. Unfortunately the large number of instance of AI and other sources to do assignments makes teachers paranoid and suspicious. Truly, they hate that feeling and would love to be proven wrong about their suspicions! If the student is unable to speak intelligently of their topic, the process of their writing, or have written significantly off topic, plagiarism or AI will be suspected. The teacher will require a conference call to talk about the assignment to gauge the level of understanding of the student's work. If the conference demonstrates a lack of knowledge of the student's own ideas, they will receive an academic honesty violation. It is imperative to schedule the challenge as soon as possible while the student's knowledge of their assignment is fresh. If the conference is satisfactory and the student demonstrates a good understanding of the topic and their answers, the conference will result in a completed contact with the teacher and, hopefully, an interesting discussion that allows the student to go deeper into their ideas and impress their teacher. These calls can end up as a positive opportunity to talk to the teacher sharing what the student knows. |
